Developed in the 1980s, this smaller rock formation lies on Makapu'u Head, just above Makapu'u Bay on the eastern tip of Oahu. The site faces the ocean atop a sea cliff, and has a spectacular sweeping view of the coastline and nearby islands. The formation has a particularly grippy and unique texture, and offers about 10 different routes, ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. There are six bolted sport routes, and numerous top-rope variations in between. Although there are 7 bolted top-rope anchors, bring webbing to sling alternate routes. The area is located within coastal dry forest habitat, and sensitive to overuse, so please stay on existing trails and take suitable precautions not to start a wildfire. Makapu'u IS the windiest climbing spot on Oahu, so bring appropriate clothing. Park your vehicle at the uppermost overlook on Kalanianaole Highway, directly overlooking Makapuu Bay and Sea Life Park below. Note, there are two parking lots in this general area, you want to park in the highest one, not the lower lot for those hiking to the lighthouse. As always, do not leave valuables in your car. Head up a rocky trail, past two old WWII bunkers. The crag is located in the saddle between the smaller summit just above you and the larger summit of Makapu'u Head upon which the lighthouse is located. The crag can be a bit difficult to spot, especially if you do not approach from the correct angle. |
