20 ft. Top-Rope ONLY

That's right, the picturesque Mokulua islands just offshore of Kailua's beautiful Lanikai beach.  Don't get too excited... even though this makes for a unique addition to the island's climbing areas, this is area is more for the curious than the serious route-seeker.

Mokunui, the larger of the two islands (northwestern most), is a popular destination with its isolated beach and view of Kailua Bay, and is usually approached by a short kayak or power boat trip.  From the beach on Mokunui, you'll follow a trail around the west side of the island which will end at Shark's Cove, a small inlet on the north side.  It is just before Shark's Cove that you'll find two top-rope anchors bolted atop a rather sharp looking, slightly overhanging face.

The jagged and often moist face has not been rated, but is definitely advanced.  Bouldering this face is not advised due to its treacherous landing, so if you plan to give this climb a try... bring a rope (a short one).

Setting up the top-rope involves a light climb up the side of the face, but please heed the DLNR restrictions and do not climb or ascend any other areas (as posted) on Mokunui, as it is a state sanctuary for ground nesting birds.  Also, take care in rounding the corner of the island reaching Shark's Cove.  The rocks are often slippery with algae, and breaking waves can appear quickly and wash violently over the trail.

This climb offers very little bang for the buck, so to speak, but if you're visiting Mokunui, or just looking for a totally off the wall new climb, you might check it out.
