35 ft. Top-Rope & Bouldering (No Sport Climbing)

On the North Shore of Oahu, this small lava flow located on the west end of the famed Waimea Bay offers climbers a variety of easy, moderate, and challenging bouldering up to 35' high.  The site lies right on the beach facing the well-known surf spot, located on Kamehameha Highway just east of Haleiwa.

A couple of spots on the cliff top have one or two bolts in place, for those wishing to set up a top-rope.  An unusual bonus for those bouldering, the sand beneath most of the cliff is often high enough against the cliff base to provide a decently gentle landing (from reasonable heights of course... the sand is not a miracle crash pad!).

Occasionally, winter swells will wash away or deposit a great deal of sand at the cliff base, thereby eliminating or uncovering new route starts and variations.  The rock is slightly on the sharp side, so be prepared to blow out your tips within as little as an hour.  And be sure to take a towel or two to place at the cliff base...sandy shoes don't make for good traction.

Being a popular spot for beachgoers of all kinds, climbers are encouraged to be considerate of others who may be seeking shade at the cliff base.  It is therefore recommended that climbers arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Don't forget your swimsuit, since the best part about bouldering Waimea Bay is a refreshing post-climb jump in the ocean!  Also, note that parking can be a problem on weekends, holidays, and midday any day.
